18 January, 2014

Earlier this week, I told you how to write an insurance blog article in one hour. One component that is essential for fast blog production is a ready-to-use topic list. You can’t afford to waste valuable minutes pondering new topics several times a week. Keep a running topic list by your computer or phone and jot down ideas as they come to you.

To get you started, here’s a list of 20 insurance blog topics to use this month:

1.  State of the industry market update – Share rate changes and key trends for a line of business.

2.  Claim lesson of the month – Have your claims department or CSRs alert you to any interesting claims that come through and share lessons learned and loss prevention tips with your readers.

3.  Insurance policy provision breakdown – Highlight one key policy provision and tell your audience how it works and why it’s important.

4.  Personal career inspiration – You don’t always have to talk about insurance. Tell a story to inspire better business or career advancement.

5.  Top 10 mistakes – Pick any topic and write the top 10 mistakes. For example, “Top 10 commercial property mistakes that result is costly claims.”

6.  Lessons from sports and sport heroes – Choose a timely sports event or story, or highlight quotes from sports heroes and find a way to relate lessons from sports to lessons in insurance.

7.  Famous quotes – Likewise, highlight three famous quotes and relate them to an aspect of your business to make clients think about risk management in a fresh new way.

8.  Book review – Tell your clients about a book you read recently and how it relates to the business at hand.

9.  How to – Give your clients step-by-step instructions for complete an important task, such as “How to Establish an Effective Safety Committee.” This could result in a series of blog articles.

15.  Best ever – Write a “best ever” column highlighting your best articles, your best claim stories, your best accident prevention advice … whatever as long as it’s best ever!

16.  Lessons from other industries – Hijack a current news story that highlights something important in a related industry and explain how it impacts your lines of business. Health reform is a great example. Even if you don’t sell health insurance, it is probably impacting your offerings or your clients in some way.

17.  Resource list – Make life easier for your readers by providing links for important resources.

18.  One problem, two solutions – Highlight a common customer conundrum such as how to prevent employee dishonesty and ask two different experts to comment with their best tips.
